… and I don’t think I’ll be taking pictures of the Triborough Bridge or Queens Midway tunnel anytime soon. Today Jen was in the city for an interview with a talent scout. A fairly un-assuming building on E36th Street in NYC, Jen vanished for a half-hour whilst I waited in the lobby and talked with a delightful old Italian lady by the name of Isabel.

To be here was a huge relief as earlier we were caught completely by surprise at the idiosyncrasy of New York law. Whilst waiting to pay a toll I, stupidly in retrospect, took a picture of the Triborough bridge. Next thing we were being pulled over by a police officer. I was completely suprised to find out that it was illegal to take a picture of or from this bridge since 9/11. After consulting with a couple of other officers, and obviously aware of my complete surprise at this, we were gladly let off with just a caution and the deletion of all the bridge photos on the SD card in the camera. As we drove off we both breathed a huge sigh of relief.

After Jen’s interview Isabel wished us well, and we were on our way again. We drove across town to Battery Park to meet with some friends of Jen’s, and eat lunch at Steamers Landing before spending 3hrs in traffic getting home. Gotta’ love New York traffic. Whilst on I-87 we passed Yankee Stadium, in the heart of the Bronx.

Well I have another job interview on Thursday, 9th. An agency in New York has seen my work and is interested in talking with me, it’s all pretty exciting stuff. Last week, Thursday, 2nd I was being interviewed at the World Wrestling Entertainment HQ in Stamford and am waiting to hear back from them. Fingers crossed.

We spent this weekend again at Tom and April’s Lakehouse on Candlewood lake, but on Tuesday decided to do a little bit of site seeing. After driving North with no particular destination we eventually arrived at Kent Falls State Park. Tuesday ( weekends are Monday and Tuesday at the minute due to Jens work ) was an incredibly hot day, in the high 80’s and with the sort of humidity that made you sweat for no apparent reason.

After leaving the comfort of the air conditioned car I figure I’d lost a half-pint of sweat in just the short walk from to the waterfall. The 250ft waterfall was pretty amazing to see and was even more amazing to walk up. Even with the comfort of the shaded woods the heat was exhausting.

After Kent Falls we continued to drive North until we came across a familiar town called Cornwall. Only 20 mins away from the state line and into Massachusetts the villages become more quaint and the abundance of covered bridges became more apparent.

We stopped at another waterfall just outside Kent that fed a Hydo-Dams further downstream.

I pondered… as “gas-guzzling” as alot of people make America out to be I have noticed alot of Hydro-Dams and other re-newable energy sources. I empathised a little with America for the brush its been tainted with in matters of the environment and green energy sources.

Later that day as I read a National Geographic Picture Atlas of “Our Fifty States” I realised we’d travelled a section of the Appalachain Trail, a 2000+ mile trail running all the way from Maine to Georgia ! and I also learnt why Connecticut is called the “Nutmeg State”. Apparently Yankee peddlers, in the earlier days of settlements, sold fake nutmegs carved from wood instead of the spice itself. huh! learn something new everyday.

Ah! this weekend has been an unintentional weekend of being British. Full English fry-up, with Heinz baked beans no less. Finally finding a store that sells some home comforts, including Mint Sauce !! ( Grandad knows how important that is ! ) and a tea shop that could rival Fortnum and Masons !

So it was kinda’ funny on a casual trip to downtown Danbury and the local CVS (Chemists), to find a whole section of “Boots” products. “Boots - Britains Best Kept Beauty Secret”. I chuckled.

Good old England. Tescos is trying to crack the US market to compete with Walmart’s acquisition of Asda in the UK, and now Boots. I wonder what’s next ! … lol as my beautiful wife just pointed out… “a good ol’ English Pub” !! So there you have it : )

So here I sit on the covered deck overlooking Candlewood lake with the laptop, courtesy of some unsecured wireless networks, updating my blog. We’re just deciding where to go and eat dinner.

Tom and April, good friends of Jen’s, kindly said we could borrow their boat and lake house anytime. So taking them up on that offer we headed out Sunday night to spend a couple of days R&R here.

With wildlife in abundance, including bugs… it’s been a very relaxing couple of days. Squirrels and Chipmunks on the lawn, regular visit’s from Ottis ( next doors golden Labrador ), and a thunderstorm over the lake last night that was more spectacular than any fireworks display.

Sitting out on the covered deck, listening to the wind bristle through the trees, watching the lightening bugs dance in the dark, specs of tiny light, like Tinkerbell dancing amongst the trees. The lake illuminates again as another crash of thunder rattles, and lightening parts the skies.

Today has been a little more sedate. A slow rise and guests over for a full English Breakfast. I discovered the best place for “English” food is the Irish section of the local supermarket. Bacon like we do in Blighty, Baked Beans, HP Sauce and for $9 a small tub of Cadbury’s Drinking Chocolate. The rate my sister drinks that, she’ll need a small loan !

Then onto a little tea-shop that Jen has spotted before, such an unassuming little place. Tucked away behind the hustle and bustle of the bigger shop front’s on Danbury’s High Street. Nestled on the side of a tranquil lake, and a selection of tea greater than I’ve ever seen this side of the Atlantic. Assam, Chai, English Breakfast and a few infusions of coffee and we’re all set.

Earlier this afternoon we were out on the lake in the canoe, until we get our boat licenses we can’t drive the boat. Some of the houses here are amazing with celebrities living in some of the more prime locations. We paddle past an island, a house stands proud. It’s an amazing site. Sun beating down, blue skies and a gentle current ebbing us along.

We headed out at 5am in preparation for my 9:45am flight. Dark, rising with the sun and a starbucks coffee, head filled with intense thought. Emotions high. Tired. I don’t want to go home, I don’t want to leave Jen.

We break into New York, George Washington bridge heading over to Newark. Sun rising, foggy, mist everywhere. I turn the car around and miss my flight. Ringing British Airways I cancel my flight and seem to casually forget the consequences of not being at work on the Monday.

We get home and fall asleep, Jen due to fly to Dallas a week on Monday I reschedule my flight.

… trips to the U.S. Embassy in London. It’s quite an un-assuming building considering America’s flamboyance for the grand. Situated in Grosvenor Square, the first thing that you will notice is the amount of extra security railing. I assume as a result of recent terrorist activity the entire embassy has been wrapped in a double curtain of additional railing and British police on patrol. Noticing the Golden Eagle standing proud on the roof top and caught myself ironically thinking “America, Land of the Free”.

I arrived at 10am for my B-Visa interview today, and like many others naively thought the words “interview” meant I’d be seen at that time. I soon realised that the 10am stated is an “approximate” time, the word approximate being used to negate actually seeing you within 1hr of your stated interview time.

Standing in the line for an hour and a half outside, it quickly accelerated around the building and onto the street. All I can say is thank God I took the early train and that it wasn’t cold and raining. My sympathies extended to every new arrival that approached the official only for him to politely tell them to join the back of line.

Creeping closer to the front of the line I eventually got called, and once you clear security and the now all to familiar metal detection, you’re allowed onto the premises where you proceed through an entrance, collect a number and wait to be called.

Reflecting on a trip to Ellis Island earlier this year it was quite humorous to see similarities haven’t changed. All of you bunched up in a hall, sitting, waiting for your number to be called, all hoping for that opportunity, that golden ticket.

#276, my turn. This turned out to be the first of a 2 stage interview. Stage 1, fingerprints and biometrics, easy enough. After which you get the luxury of sitting down again… for another 2 hours !

Waiting, you find way’s to entertain yourself. Chat with people sitting next to you, listen to their stories. I met some guy working a ski season over in Park City, Utah and another couple who wanting a B Visa for a year to buy a motor home and go travelling around America. The cultural diversity was pretty amazing. Anyone and everyone, business men, women, children, old, young. I resorted to listening to my iPod and fidgeting for the next 2 hours. Eventually my number was called again, this time for a 2nd interview, and a ruthless one at that I might add.

I think I had the immigration official from hell, after 5 questions my application was declined - “Not satisfied of my intent to return to England”, my form was stamped and I exited out onto Park Lane thinking ”Great ! £120 and 4 hours for nothing, am I ever going to get to be with Jen in America”; and there I was on the train this morning reading the headlines “Britain is such a soft touch, even the American’s are immigrating for free health care and houses”…. lol, o! the irony.

Well this is just a set back. I am quite clearly left with 2 options. An H (Employment) or K(Fiancee) visa. Time continue the job hunt ! Unless of course we get married by Elvis in Vegas. :-))

My head still pounding with sinus trouble from my cold we sat waiting on a delayed plane for take off. One hour later we we’re sky born. The delay was certainly worth it though. As we spiralled skyward we were rewarded with the most amazing view’s of Manhatten Island below us. The Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, The Empire State / Chrysler building’s, Time Square, and Central Park washed away beneath us in a pool of light as we ebbed through the darkness. Fortunately I managed to sleep most of the flight and the landing was just as spectacular as the take off. Flying into London at 6am local time, watching the sunrise on the horizon, the clouds a perfect sheet of white, like a placid lake, perfectly still. Not a ripple. Then more clouds formed, reaching for the heavens like the nebular cloud’s of a new born star, the blinking light’s of aeroplane’s taking off from Heathrow completing a surreal solar landscape as they brushed through the cloud. Best flight scenary-wise yet ! Might even top sunset over the Canadian Rockie’s flying home from Vancouver.

On the day I fly lol. Well I woke up so I thought I may as well, unusally for me, get up. It’s another bright sunny day out here, and the sun is just rising casting some beautiful shadow’s over everything.

Hard to imagine that I’m heading back to the UK, I really don’t want to.

… well Narragansett, Rhode Island anyway. Today I learn’t that there is an art to surfing… AND… to mowing a lawn on a tractor mower.

After an early start we arrived at Narrangansett in a little over two hours to what Greg described as perfect wave’s. To me they looked like nothing at all, ahhh! the naivety of in-experience.

( Picture’s of the beach and surfer’s at Narragansett, RI. Despite the overcast weather the water temperature was perfect ).

After a quick introduction to paddling, positioning on the board, how to spot a set, and ride a wave I paddled out to where the rest of the surfer’s were. It was whilst paddling that I realised those tiny looking wave’s were actually in fact a 3-4ft swell, with 3ft wave’s and when your paddling into one and it’s just about to break it’s pretty scary stuff. After swolling about half the ocean we all sat on our board’s waiting for the perfect break. This is where the fun begin’s, spot the break, paddle into it, and hopefully you hit the crest of the wave as it breaks. To far back on the board and you dig in with your fin’s and wipe out, to far forward and you nose plough wipe out and swallow the wave.

See I thought surfing would be no problem, by the end of the day I would be standing up and cutting wave’s, riding tube’s…. lol. How wrong. 3hr’s later I was still body boarding. Learning to time the wave and ride it all the way into the beach.

I have to admit it’s pretty addictive, just waiting for one more set. Another ride. Starting out you miss so many wave’s, but when you hit it right and the wave take’s you all the way into the beach, now that’s pretty damn cool ! Next trick is learning to stand up on the damn thing !

After arriving back in Southbury I said to Greg I’d mow his lawn, really just wanting a go on the tractor mower, big kid ? Yes.

Anyway all I can say his how the hell do you get straight lines. This thing does 0-15mph in a second, if you don’t hold on when you release the clutch your over the back. Then there is the turning circle. Dang. Well in the end I just ended up doing circles. I thought it looked pretty neat !
